History of the Village Hall

The table below gives a brief overview of the significant dates in the life of the Hall. We didn't stop developing in 1994 by the way! Further dates and information will be added as soon as possible. In the meantime, if you are in the Hall, a plaque displaying historic moments can be seen on the wall by the Meeting Room.

Inaugural Womans Institute (W.I.) meeting at Village School

1922

Land Purchased for £25

1923

W.I. Hall Official opening

1928

Water Installed

1930

Alice Beer's history of Buckland completed

1933

Electricty installed

1936

Alice Beer's MS & Book Rights given

1939

W.I. Members & Hall dedicated to National Service for the War

1981

The men's Club became the Village Hall

1983

W.I. and Village Hall amalagate

1987

W.I. wound up and £300 donated to hall. Snooker Hall extension completed

1988

Freehold of Hall conveyed to Village Hall Trustees

1988

Winner: Best Run Village hall in West Devon

1989

Front Extension completed

1990

Winner: Best run Village Hall in Devon

1992

Winner: Best Run Village Hall in West Devon

1994

Winner: Best Run Village Hall in West Devon
(This competition didn't take place again after 1994)

2002 New Meeting Room, Drama Store etc opened by Lord Morley
Disabled access provided

2005

Kitchen completely refurbished, with new cooker, dishwasher and cabinets. New china and crockery also purchased.
